Malta-based SCGO awarded online gaming licence in Dutch jurisdiction

Malta-based SCGO Limited has secured an online gambling licence from the Dutch regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). The licence allows SCGO to offer online games of chance in the Netherlands, although the specific brand has not yet been confirmed. This makes SCGO the 24th operator to receive approval for igaming in the country. The KSA has proposed changes to gambling laws, including granting the authority to create false identities for compliance checks and updating regulations for land-based slots.

Licence valid for five years

The license granted by the Dutch regulatory body, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), became effective on 23 June. This significant development allows SCGO to provide its innovative iGaming platform to players in the Netherlands for the next five years, until 22 June 2028. However, it remains uncertain which of SCGO’s brands will be operated under this license.

The granting of this license positions SCGO as the 24th operator permitted to offer iGaming services in the Netherlands. Notably, SCGO is primarily recognized for its prominent brand, Vbet, which is currently operating under a licence obtained from the Malta Gaming Authority. This new licence in the Netherlands expands SCGO’s reach and offers the company an opportunity to tap into the lucrative Dutch online gambling market.

In a related development, KSA recently made an “urgent appeal” to the Dutch Minister for Legal Protection, Franc Weerwind, regarding the need to amend the supervisory technicalities of the Remote Gambling Act (KOA). Weerwind, who will be responsible for evaluating the KOA in 2024, has been requested to modify the law to grant KSA access to false identity documents for enforcement and supervision purposes. The intention behind this request is to equip KSA with the necessary tools to monitor compliance among KOA-licensed gambling providers effectively.

By obtaining authorization to generate false ID documents, KSA aims to enhance its oversight capabilities and ensure that gambling providers operating under the KOA comply fully with the established regulations.

Dutch gaming sector to expand further

The Netherlands has been making significant strides in the field of online gambling since the introduction of the KOA. This legislation, which came into effect on 1 April 2021, established a regulated online gambling market in the country, marking a significant shift from the previous prohibition. With the issuance of licenses to reputable operators like SCGO, the Dutch market is expected to experience further growth and offer a safe and regulated environment for online gambling enthusiasts.

SCGO’s acquisition of an online gambling licence in the Netherlands solidifies its position as a major player in the iGaming industry. The licence enables SCGO to provide its cutting-edge platform to Dutch players, contributing to the expansion of the regulated online gambling market in the country. Furthermore, KSA’s appeal for modified supervisory measures demonstrates the commitment of Dutch authorities to ensure compliance and responsible gambling within the framework of the KOA. As the Netherlands continues to evolve as a prominent gambling jurisdiction, both operators and regulators are working together to establish a thriving and secure online gambling landscape.
