Gov’t data reveals Covid-19 lockdowns fuel surge in online gambling among UK elderly?

A surge in online gambling among older adults in the UK has been linked to the Covid-19 lockdowns, according to recent government data. The Gambling Commission revealed that nearly 39 percent of individuals aged 65-74 gambled online in the past four weeks, marking a 124 percent increase since 2019.?

During the pandemic, traditional gambling outlets, including horse racing, cricket, and football, were suspended, leading many elderly individuals to turn to online gambling for entertainment. This shift was amplified by the increased isolation older adults faced during lockdowns, combined with aggressive marketing by online gambling platforms.

According to the UK Addiction Treatment Group, the percentage of online gamblers aged 65 and over rose from 11.3 percent in 2016 to 17.4 percent in 2020, with post-pandemic figures showing continued growth. The easy access to low-stake games on online platforms has made gambling more appealing to seniors, expanding participation in this demographic.

Risks of online gambling for the elderly

While online gambling offers convenience, it also presents significant risks for older adults, who may be more vulnerable to financial exploitation. Experts caution that online gambling can lead to addiction, financial losses, and exposure to fraud. Research indicates that over 420,000 people in the UK lose more than £2,000 annually through online gambling, with around 1.4 million individuals classified as “problem gamblers.”?

Additionally, the mental health risks associated with gambling addiction are concerning. Addiction has been linked to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, issues that may be intensified by the isolation many elderly individuals experience. The ease of access to online gambling platforms may exacerbate these challenges.

Tackling the increase in elderly online gambling

The growing number of elderly online gamblers has raised concerns among experts, who are calling for increased awareness and preventive measures. It is essential for family members and caregivers to support older adults in using the internet safely; while also ensuring they understand the potential risks of online gambling.?

Tools such as self-exclusion agreements and software to block gambling sites can help protect vulnerable individuals from developing gambling addictions, as experts continue to advocate for better safeguards against the dangers posed by online gambling.?
